One of the great joys of childhood is the ability to live in the moment. This year, I intend to embrace what the French call joie de vivre which Google translates as an “exuberant enjoyment of life”. That sounds pretty wonderful doesn’t it? It also encompasses the feeling we at Life is Sweet try to impart to our customers.
It is nearly impossible to be gloomy in a candy shop, but especially our candy store. Picture this: You walk in from the cold and the first thing you are hit with is a rainbow of color and a cheery greeting from our staff. They explain how you can pick your own candies and encourage you to take your time and enjoy the shopping process. There are multicolored Spree candies, jelly beans in every hue, M& M’s looking like a jar of sprinkles, apothecary jars filled with chocolate covered everything (nuts, raisins, even espresso beans!) and nostalgic candies scattered like jewels throughout the store. There are baskets beneath these beautiful shelves filled with wrapped candies and entire sections devoted to specialty treats.
You wander past these beautiful clear jars of every candy there is, and take in the smiling faces of not only children in all their glory, but that of Grandmas reminiscing about their love of Mary Janes, a middle aged businessman reaching for a Charleston Chew and a cluster of teenagers oohing and aahing over the extensive selection of Harry Potter candies. There’s a Dad at the counter ordering our homemade fudge to be delivered (it’s a surprise!) to his daughter at Keene State College. In the back of the store there’s a young man carefully picking gourmet chocolates for his sweetheart, while a young mother is picking up a dozen snowball cupcakes for her child’s birthday. People are happy, getting special treats and living in a special moment at Life is Sweet.
There are so many choices you may not be sure what you want to get! That’s ok- no one here will rush you. We have coffee, cocoa and tea. Order a cup, sit in our cozy corner and watch the happy scenes unfold before you while you get warm and mentally make your choices. Will it be a salted caramel cupcake? Perhaps you’d prefer some of our penuche fudge or a Cadbury Flake Bar from our collection of English candies? There’s a tingly feeling of anticipation and you wish you could be like that 5 year old child running from jar to jar, taking just 1 or 2 or each candy so you can try everything!
Don’t worry-you can! There is a special feeling of delight people experience when they enter Life is Sweet. They revert to younger versions of themselves, giddy with pleasure in the moment. We won’t judge. It’s part of the reason we work in a candy store-we love that feeling ourselves!
Here at Life is Sweet, we recognize life is too short not to treasure every moment. So embrace your own “exuberant enjoyment of life”, buy a special treat for your inner child and make some promises (to yourself) about how you plan to make every moment count this year. Share your ideas for joie de vivre in our comments-we want every moment to count too!
